Roman clothing and jewelry always revealed the social status of the wearer in rank and authority. It showed, for example, who was an Emperor, senator, soldier, Roman citizen, slave, wife or vestal (Roman priestess) and of course, who was gladiator. However, in general, Roman clothing was pretty easy.
They wore about two to three garments and – not all – sandals. The materials used varied. There was little change or even something like trends in fashion and style during the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire.
Contact with the Greeks in the south and with the Etruscans in the north gave the Roman taste for beauty,and showed a certain expression in their “flowing robes”. Weiterlesen →
Ancient Roman Clothing: Tunics
The tunic, a garment for both men and women, was worn by all Romans.
Tunics mostly consisted of two rectangular pieces of woollen material, joined at the shoulders, which hung down to knee level. Both sides were closed, apart from the openings at the sleeves. They were usually made of undyed wool. Tunics were bound at the waist by a belt or a piece of rope. Weiterlesen →
